Music & Memory Webinar Training
iPod-based personalized music delivers meaningful therapeutic benefits and enhanced quality of life for persons living in long-‐term care facilities. We are pleased to announce our Fall webinar training schedule. A three-part webinar series will be offered three different times:
What webinar participants will learn: Is nursing home use of digital music legal? How other facilities minimize loss and theft? How personalized music reduces resistance to daily care. How to create totally customized playlist for each resident (even when the resident has no voice). How to set up and manage an “industrial-strength” iTunes library. What members of the leadership team need to be involved, and how? How does one respond to hygiene requirements? What is the care and feeding of the devices? Where are the devices stored? How to overcome initial concerns of staff. When and how to manage behaviors with fewer meds. When and how family should be involved. When and how volunteers should be involved. How to secure program support from community groups. When can residents make a contribution to the program’s operation? With the imminent demise of physical media (e.g., videotapes, CDs), how does this program future-proof your move into the age of digital entertainment for residents? What research has already been done around personalized music? How can we measure the success of our program? How to manage multiple facilities with one (or more) iTunes accounts. How to obtain free iPods and music. What webinar participants will receive? Guide to Top Elder Music in 26 Languages Digital Music Preference Assessment Form Best practice policies and procedures Resident change request form Guides to running an iPod donation drive for schools and community groups Directory of all Music & Memory certified facilities Family Consent Form, Sign-Out template, and more Flyer to market personalized music program to prospective residents and their families The webinar consists of three 90-minute sessions. This webinar series will offered once a month during the next three months: October 2, 3, 4 November 7, 8, 9 December 4, 5, 6 Why personalized music? Music is already a central recreational activity in long-‐ term care. Because it is group based, music availability is time-‐limited and the song selection is age-‐appropriate, not person specific. It turns out that total music personalization magnifies the benefits of music for residents regardless of cognitive, physical, or social situation in the following ways: - Reducing agitation and sundowning. - Increasing resident cooperation and attention. - Increasing engagement and socialization. - Providing meaningful activity for persons in dialysis, on vent, bedbound, and others less likely to benefit from group activities. - Enabling a non-pharmacological approach to reducing anti-‐psychotic medications. Cost: The $2,000 cost of the program is funded by $1,000 from the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation in combination with the $1,000 grant match from each nonprofit facility. This will enable any nursing home to implement a best practice approach to personalized music. The number of grants is limited and will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The training and support fee for for-profit facilities is $1,000. iPods, music, and related accessories are supplied by facility. Please Note: For nonprofits, the $1000 in iPods/iTunes cards grant match will be limited to the first 25 facilities for September training only.
